Leeds United boss Daniel Farke believed Man City shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma feigned an knock in the second half of their top-flight clash
Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke has accused Manchester City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma of feigning injury to "bend the rules" in their top-flight match at the Etihad
Leeds got off to the poorest start with Phil Foden finding the net inside the opening 60 seconds, before Josko Gvardiol extended the home side's lead ahead of the interval
Nevertheless, Leeds fought back after the interval following a change of tactics and formation, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring straight away after the resumption
And with City visibly struggling to deal with the changes just before Lukas Nmecha equalized, City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma collapsed to receive treatment, enabling manager Pep Guardiola to call his team to the touchline and deliver new directions in the 120 seconds play was halted for
"Everybody understands why he collapsed," Farke commented
"This isn't the obvious issue. Why he went down it was clear. It is within the bounds of the regulations. It is clever. If I like it? If it's within the spirit of sportsmanship? If it should be like this I will reserve to myself. It is up to the governing bodies to determine a solution"
"I questioned the assistant referee at this moment if you want to do something. Our options are limited"
"Unless we educate our players in the game what to do in terms of sportsmanship and sportsmanship and everything and if we simply attempt to bend the rules and even do a simulated knock in an attempt to do an additional team meeting, it is not what I like myself. But if it is within the rules I can't complain"
Phil Foden's stoppage-time winner sent Leeds to a sixth consecutive defeat in seven top-flight fixtures to leave them eighteenth in the Premier League, with only bottom club Wolves having scored less top-flight strikes this season
However, Farke, who has been criticised for a lack of boldness particularly around changes, was almost vindicated for a bold decision at the half-time that nearly reversed their situation
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Foden, stated that his side were only able to regroup after Guardiola's sideline meeting with his players
"At half-time we were in command. Second half they emerged, harried us a lot higher, they deployed a pair up top and altered the setup a little bit," said Phil Foden
"We genuinely had difficulty to get hold of the match. We got together on the side of the field and adjusted a couple of aspects and it got better from there. That little break was crucial to make corrections"
The most recent time Leeds lost four straight consecutive Premier League matches was in the 2022-23 season, when their season ended with demotion
However, while Daniel Farke said that "their main emotion is frustration", their second period display offered sufficient evidence to suggest they are able of halting their present form and climbing up the standings
"Displaying such a display should give us lots of confidence. If we show such determination and togetherness we have a great chance to earn the points," the manager added
"We had the belief prior to the game, during the fixture and following the game. Otherwise you can't come back with a performance like that. We have great unity and determination in the locker room"
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Celtic forward Chris Sutton remarked: "Everybody expected it to be a comfortable win for Manchester City, but it has been anything but comfortable in this second period"
"Leeds United can derive a lot from this performance with the manner they have played in this second half"
"Following that were Daniel Farke's changes, who is frequently questioned for not being as proactive as he ought to be. Dominic Calvert-Lewin was introduced and physically challenged the City centre-backs"
"It appeared like it might be a huge turning point in Leeds United's campaign, but City found a measure of quality. They escaped with one this evening"
